Types of Air Filters for Your Home’s HVAC System
An air filter is a device that is used to trap and remove particles from the air that is circulated by an HVAC system. When it comes to air filters, there are a variety of options to choose from.
Fiberglass FilterÂ
- Cost: $
- MERV rating: 2-3
- Replacement: every 2-4 weeks
- Although this filter causes less strain on your HVAC system as it allows more air flow, it’s only able to catch larger particles in the air. If you are someone with allergies or have respiratory problems, this may not be the right filter for you.
Pleated Filter
- Cost: $ – $$ (depending on MERV rating)
- MERV rating: 5+
- Replacement: every 1-3 months
- This air filter has more surface area than a fiberglass filter and is able to catch smaller particles in the air.
4-Inch Media Filter
- Cost: $$
- MERV rating: 13+
- Replacement: every 6 months
- A media air filter is 4-inches thick compared to a 1 or 2-inch fiberglass or pleated filter. This has more surface area and is able to catch smaller particles in the air.
Electronic Filter (air cleaner)
- Cost: $$$
- MERV rating: 13+
- Replacement: Media 3 months
- This air cleaner uses electricity to attract the smallest particles that standard filters can’t catch.
HEPA Filter
- Cost: $$$$
- MERV rating: 17+
- Replacement: yearly maintenance
- This air filter is used for hyper-sensitive individuals and is the highest rated filtration value. It goes through multiple stages of filtration.
