How to Hide an Outdoor Air Conditioner Unit

how to hide air conditioner unit outside

Do you ever go out to enjoy your beautiful backyard only to rest your eyes on that large, unseemly AC unit? How do you hide that big, bulky metal box in your backyard? Why not make it a beautiful addition to your landscaping. Whether you choose to make this a DIY project or buy pre-made materials, you can have peace and tranquility as you rest your eyes on an enjoyable feature instead of an unsightly eyesore. Here are 7 ways to disguise your air conditioning unit and integrate it into your landscaping.

1. Go Green

You can add instant curb appeal to your home by using tall shrubs, potted plants, pebbles, flower boxes, vertical gardening with edibles, annuals, or perennials or even lanterns to decorate around your outdoor air conditioning unit. Just be sure to leave at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides of the unit.

2. Cedar Panels

Cedar panels are beautiful and offer coverage without hindrance to your system when properly installed. Add some plant around or to the side of the panels to beautify the entire area.

3. Lattice

Lattice looks elegant, but still provides full coverage. You can choose from a tight lattice that optimizes full coverage or an open weave style with a bigger design. Common materials for lattice are Birch, Cedar, and Redwood that can be painted or stained and easily embellished. Lattice is generally inexpensive, durable and environmentally friendly.

4. Willow Fencing or Panels

Willow fencing panels can replicate a more natural look by allowing you to change the height of the fence in a natural rolling manner. Additionally, each piece of work is tailored to specifically meet your requirements.

5. Hazel Panels or Switches

Hazel woven fencing is a traditional and ecofriendly paneling. This natural fencing is a perfect addition to a backyard inspired by a traditional English country garden. Switches and Bamboo can also be used for woven fencing panels.

6. Shabby Chic Shutter Screen

You can repurpose an old shutter screen into a fence that hides your AC unit. Paint the screen with a vibrant color such as green, yellow or blue to enhance your outdoor area.

7. Beautiful Mosaic with Broken Glass

For those who want to make an artistic addition to your backyard, try creating a beautiful mosaic with broken glass within a fencing structure.

Turning your unsightly outdoor air conditioning unit into a beautiful landscaping feature is easy and affordable. Always leave enough space to allow airflow and access. Fencing should not be too close to the unit, usually at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides and don’t cover the top of the system.

Be sure to check with your HVAC expert at GreenBox Home Services before installing a landscaping feature around your outdoor air conditioning to verify the clearance needed for your specific AC unit.
